Cuba Photography Trip Day 3: Familia (Family)

We wake to the sound of roosters announcing the impending sunrise. As we left our hotel for another early morning walk, rooster crows echoed from different streets and alleys. The streets are empty when we first venture out. Neighbors greet us from their doors and windows, with smiles and greetings of good morning.

As we turned one corner, we discovered a black cat, staring at an empty window. Soon a gentleman appeared at the window, along with his cat. He says the black cat comes every morning, and the 2 cats visit with each other.

Children were out roller blading, chasing each other, and getting ready for ballet lessons.

Neighbors were out and about, walking dogs, cleaning the streets, delivering bread, and peddling taxis.

We really enjoy seeing the classic cars on the streets! This morning there was a rainbow of classics.

We met this family on the promenade. They offered to do a dance for us.

Today we are in for several treats: the first was a cigar and rum tasting. We met at the home of couple who are sommeliers of cigars and rum! They prepared drinks with the finest Cuban rum, and showed us how to enjoy and savor a cuban cigar with our drinks! This was a real treat, and truly a unique and first experience for Deb!

After our rum and cigar tasting, we travelled to Alain’s son’s family home where we were treated to a home cooked meal. We were welcomed with an array of appetizers of fresh fruits and homemade treats. Dinner was delectable dishes of rice and beans, fresh fish, chicken, and lots of smiles and laughter.

Art and I have travelled a good bit, and there are only a few experiences we would call exceptional. Today was one of those days. The reason, we believe is that today was a day filled with family and community.

We saw families playing and interacting in the streets of Havana. We were welcomed by families for cigar and rum tasting, and dinner. As we rode back to the hotel, we recognized this feeling of connection, of belonging. It is truly magical when you meet new people, and their kindness welcomes and embraces you as if they had known you for so, so long. What a wonderful day of familia.
