Cuba Photography Trip Day 4: Viaje por Carretera! (Road Trip!)

Today we are traveling from Havana to the Bay of Pigs on the southern coast. We hopped into our classic rides and headed out first to the east, then to the south towards the coast.

As we leave Havana, buildings give way to lush green countryside. In the early morning, we pass people preparing for their day. It is an opportunity to see life in the countryside, life that seems to be at a much calmer and gentle pace than that in the city.

We see a variety of different forms of transportation. Cars and busses are interspersed with horse drawn carts and families commuting on motorbikes.

We passed this family with a content passenger!

We stopped for lunch at a roadside spot, and then were back on our way.

One of our stops was to a crocodile farm where we saw some massive crocs that we were glad were behind a strong chainlink fence! Some of the ponds (without crocodiles) were beautiful and coated with lotus.

We had the opportunity to dip our toes into the turquoise waters on a small local beach near the Bay of Pigs. This beach is open to the public, quiet, with a few local families also out enjoying the beautiful day. It was a welcome break from the long ride out, and a respite before we begin our journey back.

As we drove back to Havana, the skies opened up with an impressive deluge of thunder and rain. The skies cleared as we arrived back to the city and we had the chance to make some more photos.

We feel that this quote is a great summary of our day:

“Road trips aren’t measured by mile markers, but by moments.”– Unknown Author

As we review our photos, we appreciate that we have captured moments; moments of life, of the everyday, something that we all share in experiencing. We love a good Viaje por Carretera!
